The First Grapes of the Harvest
August is upon us, and though summer is now half over, Napa Valley harvest season has just begun. On Tuesday, August 2, Honig Vineyard & Winery, just 10 minutes down the road from Napa Valley Lodge, announced the arrival of its first batch of grapes, marking the earliest harvest in the valley’s history. Other winemakers will soon follow suit, with sparkling and white wine grapes usually the first to be pressed, followed by various reds through October, then Cabernet Sauvignon and other late-harvest grapes on into the cooler days of December. The magic of Napa Valley during harvest season is difficult to describe: as workers rush to pick the grapes at just the right moment, a collective exuberance surges through the vineyards, along the streets, in the shops. Winery tours, grape stompings, wine tastings, receptions, parties, and many other adventures abound.
